My most recent trip was to Brazil, where I attended the SIAVS trade fair.

Where did you go on your most recent trip, and what was the purpose of your visit?

Brazil. I attended the SIAVS trade fair in São Paulo. It’s Brazil’s largest trade fair for the entire protein industry, covering everything from beef and fish to poultry and pork. All in one place.

What was the best or most memorable moment of this trip?

I actually spent the entire trip at the trade fair, so most of my memories are work-related. But what really matters is feeling that you make a difference in the market, closing deals and enjoying time with the people you do business with. The more trust you build with your partners, the more confidence you gain. That, in turn, leads to more business. Conversations no longer feel forced; they flow naturally. Doing business becomes easier too.

What was one of the biggest cultural differences compared to the Netherlands?

Food is probably the biggest difference, because I’m not a fan of the food in the Netherlands. When it comes to beer, though, Brazilians and Dutch people have something in common: they both enjoy a beer. Cycling is another big difference. Just try riding a bike in São Paulo: it’s impossible.

What did you learn or take away from this business trip?

We know the market inside out, and people enjoy doing business with us. Everyone is different, and sometimes you need to be flexible to make things work. The most important lesson: business knows no borders. In a globalised world where everyone has access to technology and data, the human factor remains decisive. It’s also essential to be there in person at the right time. Because the market is so dynamic, you need to be on the ground to gather as much information as possible and close deals.
